I am a married working mother with 2 children under the age of 20. I have recently had to help a family member bury their parent. I believe in helping family, but I also believe adults must take responsibility and plan for their future as well as their children. It is a hardship for some of the family members to pay for the final arrangements, especially in this economy.  It is truly the responsibility of the grownup to carry Life or Burial Insurance. It should also be mandatory that parents carry Life Insurance or burial insurance on their children as well. If the individual is receiving public or government assistance- it should be automatically withheld from their benefits. Once the person has expired, the funds would be paid to the funeral home after the funeral or final arrangements are made and then the balance is paid to the beneficiary(s).

I’m a nurse and I really have witnessed firsthand whether it is the adults lack of responsibility, or lack of concern of not having Life insurance, burial insurance or health insurance. This email is not only about Life Insurance; it's about the Obama Care as well. I believe this type of law is needed as well, because we live in a society were some people believe in practicing reactive behavior vs. proactive behavior.

I really pray someone takes this email serious and consider the need to mandate Life or burial insurance. It is greatly needed. If you would like to discuss this topic further, please feel free to email me about this valid concern and need.

Thank you in advance for your time and reply,

Belinda T. Ferguson, RN, BSN

You have some interesting points and I agree that our society tends to be one where we are not proactive.  I believe the question is, what creates the lack of proactively?  In my opinion it has been created by an entitlement mentality.  The more we feel entitled to things the less we feel responsible to ourselves.  In my opinion the answer is not found in government but in individuals.  More government mandates will only increase our dependence and feelings of entitlement.  Maybe it is to optimistic to believe that people have a deep inward desire to take care of themselves but I do believe this is true.  I think it is interesting that spending on welfare programs has grown at a huge rate over the last several decades yet poverty rates have remained the same.  I am not sure of the answer to your question but I believe that the more we can encourage individuals to be proactive and not reliant the better we will be as a society.  I also believe in the power of true charity which comes from the heart.  Private charities almost always do a better job at helping those who are less fortunate than government programs. Charity is not true or genuine when it is in the form of a forced tax. In situations where it is not possible for individuals to care for their own needs, private charities should be the primary source for support where possible.
